I feel like I should explain something. Cole is currently on his ‘walkabout’ to find out about his true feelings, and stop being confused about Alison and Luisa. He does this exorcism that his dad did for a woman named Nan, in order to expel his feelings for her. If it worked, then he was supposed to send all the love letters back to Nan, which she thought he did. Turns out, his father killed himself a few weeks after the last letter she sent him, because he couldn’t get over her. Cole’s mother had sent the letters, two years later, making it seem like he had given up on her.
